TUSD Fine Arts / OMA

In Memoriam –  Gene Jones 1916-2013

Tucson Unified School District / Opening Minds through the Arts mourns the passing of H. Eugene Jones, an important icon in the Tucson philanthropic community. Opening Minds through the Arts owes a great debt to Gene’s vision and financial generosity. As one of the founders of OMA, Gene helped bring the joy of creative education to tens of thousands of children in TUSD schools.

Gene, and his wife Ruth, moved to Tucson in 1978. A Dartmouth College graduate and decorated World War II veteran, he made his fortune as a business entrepreneur who transformed failing businesses into multi-million dollar businesses. His personal love of music motivated him to direct his energies to the promotion of arts education, as well as serving as the president of the Tucson Symphony Board. One of his later accomplishments was receiving one of five prestigious, national Purpose Prizes in 2007. The $100,000 award by Encore.org, with funding from the John Templeton Foundation and The Atlantic Philanthropies, is given to people over 60 years of age who are engaged in transformational social projects.

The OMA staff and teaching artists are greatly saddened by the loss of this fine gentleman, and extend our condolences to his wife Ruth. He will long be remembered for his humanity and his love of community. Gene Jones passed away at his home on January 9th. A Memorial Service is being planned for April 13 at St. Phillips in the Hills Episcopal Church around 2 PM.

Win a pizza party and get your artwork on a garbage truck!

City of Tucson Environmental Services is sponsoring a new poster contest for students in grades 6-8 attending school within the Tucson city limits.  Students are invited to create a poster that effectively and clearly highlights the importance of recycling in the City of Tucson. This contest is an opportunity for students to creatively express their understanding of recycling and waste reduction in our community and to spread that message to the residents of Tucson.

In addition to winning some fun prizes, grand prize winners will have their artwork enlarged and displayed on the sides of Tucson’s collection trucks!

You can find more information at www.outreach-scheduling.org/recyclingpostercontest or call the Environmental Education Exchange at 670-1442.  Entries are due by February 1, 2013.

TUSD Students meet with Carol Burnett

When Carol Burnett was in Tucson for a recent UApresents appearance, she took time the day before the appearance to meet with students at University of Arizona's Crowder Hall. Through UApresents, 100 places were available for TUSD students to attend and have the opportunity to be part of an up close and personal experience with an true American icon! After the Friday program with students and the Saturday public program at University of Arizona's Centennial Hall, Carol mentioned that she was "absolutely in love" with her experience with the students! What a wonderful tribute to our students! Opportunities like this are made possible by the UApresents In the Schools program. Arrangements in this case, as in many of In the School programs, were made on very short notice. When UApresents has a chance for student participation, they contact Carole Marlowe at Fine Arts / OMA and she gets the word out to teachers who might be able to take advantage of the opportunity. For more information, you can contact Carole at carole.marlowe@tusd1.org or call 225-4911.
