 Ride of the Valkyrie!

Last Curriculum Connection we told you about the Mykl Wells Workshop that will be part of this summer's IDeA professional development sessions. This month some of the Fine Arts staff had a mini-workshop with the sculptor. Armed with box cutters, rulers, glue, tape, staplers and lots of cardboard, staff members make a variety of headwear. Below you can see Mykl Wells explaining how to build a basic circular support structure (left) and fill in the open spaces (right). Mykl's instructions were very clear and succinct and you can see the results in the Viking helmet made by Sarah Howard.  Everyone, including Mykl, made an outstanding contribution to cardboard fashion.

Field trips for deeper understanding

One of the basic ideas of Opening Minds through the Arts is the using the arts to open up subject content areas by integrating art forms with math, science, etc. It's usually implicit in OMA classrooms and in OMA lessons that the subject content areas tend to also be integrated with each other. This is illustrated well in a recent article co-authorer by TUSD Science Program Coordinator Joan Gilbert. The article in the March issue of Science Scope, the Journal of the National Science Teachers Association, describes the use of field-trips to teach geology, ecology, cultural history and writing skills to middle school students. Pre- and Post- field-trip tests showed that students had significantly more deep understandings of the area's geology, ecosystems, and history after the field trip. The title of the article is Field-trip Pedagogy for Teaching "Sense of Place" in Middle School, and you can get a copy of the article from Educational Materials Center or you can read it online through the Pima County Library. If you have a Pima County Library card you can access many online databases through the Pima County Library online resources page. If you don't have a Pima County Library card you can get to most of the same online resources through Arizona State Library.

Playing well together - Tucson Concert Band and TUSD students

In a great example of district and community collaboration, on April 25 Tucson Concert Band together with students from Cholla, Palo Verde, and Doolen Middle School held a concert at Palo Verde High School. The concert came about because several members of the Tucson Concert Band teach at TUSD Schools enabling band director Jessica England to pull together an outstanding performance.
