TUSD Fine Arts / OMA

Preachin' to the Choir

eSchool News recently had an article on how music education improves learning skills and bridges the student achievement gap. Northwestern University professor, Nina Kraus, studied the Harmony Project, a music education program used with 1600 students in three states. Over time, Kraus compared students with two years of music education in the Harmony Project to students with no music education. The results were incredible, said Kraus, as those students who never participated in HP followed the current national average of showing diminished reading scores year after year. However, students who did receive music education increased their reading scores year after year. That's preachin' to the choir for us. TUSD's own Opening Minds through the Arts has seen that kind of improvement over and over again. OMA research has shown that students in the OMA program improve in all of the tested areas, not just reading scores.
