TUSD Fine Arts / OMA

    Meet OMAR!

Newest Lee Center staff member invites you to think "outside the box."

I was created last summer by internationally recognized Tucson artist Mykl Wells during Opening Minds through the Arts’ workshop for classroom teachers, which is appropriately named IDEA (Instructional Design for the Arts).

During that two-day intensive seminar, our OMA teaching artists, along with Mykl Wells, presented teachers with new pedagogies for using the fine arts to creatively teach the core curriculum.

The inspirational energy of that workshop prompted some of our OMA teaching artists to represent TUSD in this year’s All Souls Procession, of which Mykl Wells was a founding member.  They also participated in the Cardboard Ball 2013, a fund raising event in support of the procession.

The theme of the Cardboard Ball is very close to my heart.  You could even say I have some “skin in the game,” as the theme is cardboard.  In celebration of the creative energies of the Tucson community, participants were encouraged to create their own art and/or costumes from cardboard and recyclable materials.

Although I had hoped to join fellow objects of art in retirement in a nice quiet gallery, I am thankful to have found gainful employment with Tucson Unified School District as a receptionist.

Please remember to sign in,

Omar Kartonnen

Tucson High Magnet School’s Art Almquist

Receives National Recognition

Congratulations to Art Almquist, Tucson High Magnet School’s theater arts teacher, and this year’s recipient of People Magazine’s “Reader’s Choice Teacher of the Year.” A well deserved recognition for a teacher who, during his seventeen year tenure with the district, developed a highly respected program, as well as being instrumental in raising more than $125,000 for its theater facilities.

Grounded in reality, Art claims his mission is not to produce Broadway stars. “I try to teach these kids that they matter, that the stories they want to tell matter.”

The award comes with a $5,000 prize presented by People Magazine at a school assembly - $4,000 for the school, and a well deserved $1000 for the gifted teacher. As one parent gratefully noted, Mr. Almquist is “the teacher every parent hopes their child will experience.”
